Why Recessions Forge Great CEOs Who Think Beyond Cost-Cutting
But the CEOs who make history in downturns aren’t the ones with the deepest cuts
January 16, 2025: Former President Donald Trump is reigniting his hardline immigration stance with plans for widespread deportations if he returns to the White House. His strategy targets an estimated 15 to 20 million undocumented immigrants residing in the United States, drawing on aggressive enforcement measures and expanding federal authority.
Central to Trump’s plan is using federal agencies, particularly Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), to execute large-scale deportation operations. He also proposes deploying military resources within U.S. borders to support immigration enforcement, challenging legal constraints such as the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits the military’s role in domestic law enforcement.
Trump’s approach includes reviving and intensifying policies from his first term, such as the “Remain in Mexico” program, strict asylum restrictions, and rapid deportations. Additionally, Trump aims to reinstate and broaden the use of Title 42, a public health order previously used to expel migrants without due process.
State governments aligned with Trump’s policies are preparing to aid these efforts. Several Republican-led states have begun drafting laws to authorize local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws, bypassing traditional jurisdiction limits. These measures could expand the reach of deportation operations beyond federal agents.
Critics warn that mass deportations on this scale could overwhelm federal agencies, strain international relations, and destabilize industries reliant on immigrant labor, particularly in agriculture, construction, and service sectors. Human rights groups have raised alarms over potential civil liberties violations and the humanitarian impact on families, including U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants.
Trump’s proposals have sparked legal and political opposition. Advocacy groups and some state governments argue that these plans could violate constitutional protections and international agreements. If these policies advance, legal battles are expected.
Despite the controversy, Trump’s renewed immigration agenda has solidified support among his base, with immigration remaining a key issue in his campaign. His aggressive stance underscores a broader political divide over immigration policy and national security, setting the stage for a contentious debate in the upcoming election.
