If you want to make it to the top in an organization, you’re told you need Executive Presence… But what is that even?
Some say it’s mostly about body language, how to dress, and the confidence you convey. Others say it’s about being seen as visionary and about how you communicate. And again others say it’s about how you manage your network and organizational politics.
Well, all these elements certainly play into your presence. Because your presence is a conglomerate of a myriad of aspects: appearance and outfit, communication, confidence, behavior under stress, listening skills, articulating your vision and what you stand for, your projected mindset, and more. No doubt about it! Because all of this determines how you show up and how you are perceived by others.
But interestingly, one thing is never (or hardly ever) talked about, although it has a massive role in your presence, in business and anywhere else, and that’s your energy!
So often, we hear people say that it takes seven seconds to make a first impression… When in reality, it’s much less than that. Because it takes a mere 0.07 seconds for our brains to figure out whether we can trust someone. That’s less than the blink of an eye. It’s that fast! And it must be that fast because it’s part of our survival mechanism. What our brains pick up here is someone’s energy.
So yes, you want to be aware of your visuals (attire, grooming, etc.), your words, your voice, your posture and body language (which, by the way, is heavily influenced by your energy and your mindset). You want to communicate confidently and demonstrate your potential through your words and your behavior. You want to showcase your resilience, adaptability and ability to work under pressure. All of these components will flow together into a compelling presence… as long as your energy is on a high[1]vibrational frequency and you are connected to your inner power energy. This isn’t so much about your level of energy as it is about the quality of your energy.
See, if you go into a meeting (virtual or in person) and your energy is off, your meeting partners will pick up on that before you even say a single word. They may not be consciously aware of it, but we all continuously interact on an energetic level. There is an energy exchange in any human interaction, whether we are aware of it or not.
If you learn to master your energy, you can intentionally enhance your perceived presence, in a matter of seconds! As you practice connecting to your inner power energy, your confidence level will go up. And as you cultivate high vibrations, such as joy, love and gratitude, this can increase your magnetism. Positive people are just more found to be around; we feel drawn to them. And when they are also charismatic, they can easily inspire enthusiasm in us.
In all of this, the central magic word is trust. If you want to come across as someone who has Executive Presence, you need to build trust in all directions. Words and conversational intelligence matter, but they will not do the trick if your energy tells a different story. Words alone are not appealing enough to our survival instincts, but most of all, when someone’s words and energy are not aligned, our intuition alerts us that something is not quite right… not authentic or trustworthy.
Our energy plays into everything: our thoughts, our behavior, our actions,… and our Executive Presence or lack thereof. So if you want to strengthen your magnetic appeal as a candidate for an executive role, maybe it’s time to pay more attention to the magic potential of your energy. It is not only a great way to elevate your positive visibility, but it will help you reduce your stress at the same time. Because energy mastery also allows you to respond calmly in the face of any challenge you encounter along the way.
From now on, check in with your energy before any meeting. When necessary, course-correct before you step into a meeting or jump on a call. Showing up powerfully can make all the difference… especially when you want to convey Executive Presence. In my book Speak up, Stand out and Shine, I share some simple techniques to do exactly that, and of course, there’s always the option of studying energy more in depth.
