The City of Austin has officially taken over ownership of the South Terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, marking the culmination of a lengthy legal battle with the terminal’s former operator, LoneStar Airport Holdings. The city exercised its eminent domain authority to acquire the terminal property, citing the need to expand the airport’s capacity and accommodate future growth.
The South Terminal opened in 2017 and was initially envisioned as a hub for low-cost carriers. However, it failed to attract the expected level of traffic, and the city decided to pursue its expansion plans by demolishing the terminal and building new gates.
LoneStar Airport Holdings vehemently opposed the city’s decision, arguing that the terminal was a valuable asset and that the city was acting in bad faith. The company sued to block the city’s acquisition of the terminal, but a court ultimately ruled in favor of the city.
The city has agreed to pay LoneStar Airport Holdings $90 million in compensation for the terminal property. The company has stated that it plans to use the proceeds to invest in other airport projects.
The city has yet to release a detailed plan to redevelop the South Terminal site. However, it has indicated that it plans to construct new gates compatible with the airport’s existing terminals.
