Suyi Erhabor, CEO, Curaga, has been crucial to the creation and transformation of Curaga from a small business to a multimillion-dollar corporation in Ontario. Suyi treats each employee as a valued individual and takes the time to understand what motivates them. Being a steadfast leader, he remains accessible to all his staff, and they ensure to reach him directly when there is a problem and to share stories of success. Being an innovator, Suyi adapts quickly and entertains new ideas because he believes that by remaining adaptable, he continually undergoes some level of change and encourages his colleagues to do the same because success depends on the entire team’s alignment.
As CEO, Suyi has developed high-quality business strategies and plans, ensuring alignment with the company’s short-term and long-term objectives. He ensures adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies to maintain the company’s legality and business ethics. “I have successfully developed highly profitable strategies and continuously work to implement the company vision.
As a leader, I manage contract negotiations with hospital leadership, manage a team of interprofessional staff and lead staffing and recruitment to alleviate hospital shortages,” says Suyi.
The trailblazer’s most significant role model has been his father. As an older immigrant to Canada, he faced the challenge of starting a new life in an unfamiliar country. He made sacrifices to provide for his family while adapting to the daily challenge of living in a country where his thick Nigerian accent was often misunderstood. He braved the ordeals and gained multiple leadership positions in various roles. His father continues to maintain leadership positions both in his professional life and his personal life. “Understanding my father’s accomplishments, I am constantly challenged to achieve even more incredible things than he did,” says Suyi. Armed with this ideology, he has been taking the company to new heights.
Suyi is working on Curaga’s never-ending mission to find a better way for every process. He is always looking for more creative responses to the dynamic business environment they operate in. As a team, they are obsessed with improving workflow. “We work to mitigate staffing shortages in hospitals by offering temporary staffing to support the needs of hospitals and other institutions requiring qualified short-term or long-term clinical and non-clinical staff,” he explains. “We understand the complexities of delivering healthcare, especially in remote areas, and can navigate the system to implement practical solutions for our clients. Our scalable workforce solutions have proven effective with multiple clients, which has led to the referral of new clients that have equally been satisfied with my team’s performance. This is only possible because we are open to new ideas and creative solutions.”
The foundation of the Curaga culture is based on always keeping them growing, innovative and passionate every day. Each one of the team members shares how they can succeed and what they value. While they come from different backgrounds and experiences, their goals unite them around a culture of success. “This is how we create an impact. This is how we change the industry,” says Suyi. “Our never-ending mission is to find a better way for every process. Finding a better way is not something we do on the side or when we have time. Rather, it’s a key priority for every one of our team members. It’s our passion, our obsession. We don’t just work IN our business – we regularly work ON our business.”
The company is constantly reviewing the technology they use to improve their workflow. They are also proudly paperless, and their paperless operation has awarded them multiple ‘Go Green’ discounts and allowed Curaga to minimize its carbon footprint. “We do have an item in our workflow that remains partially digital, but we are reviewing options to fully digitizing that as well.”
For Suyi, communication is a crucial component to their success. This means being open to the clients and fellow team members, respectively. “Our clients need to know what’s going on, good or bad. We reach out and update them about what’s going on, what their options are and what we recommend they should do. This way, they don’t have to constantly track us down to understand what’s happening,” explains Suyi. “We do very well to listen to our clients. We listen to everyone – interview candidates and even our competitors. We do this because we know that listening brings awareness, which in turn brings innovation and growth.”
Curaga is currently involved in multiple projects in the health sector – the common feature is helping to address the shortage that the COVID-19 pandemic has created in terms of staffing. In one project, a hospital network reached out because they had tried for multiple years to secure a specialized clinical member for their team, which inhibited the operation and subsequent expansion of the hospital’s program. “My team not only identified an individual that committed a significant amount of time alleviating their shortage but ultimately remained with them as a permanent member. Our solution allowed for the hospital to operate its program at total capacity and work towards expanding further,” says Suyi.
The most significant achievement of Curaga is that they have grown from their humble beginnings of a team of just one to hiring over 50 staff and supporting multiple hospital networks while maintaining a goal of providing above-average wages to staff and the provision of health benefits to temporary staff. For the days to come, Suyi and his team are working on additional ways to reward loyal clients. “We currently offer special discounts, but we are working on more ways to show our clients that they are the heart and soul of our business, and their continued support means the world to us. I guess you will have to wait to find out more. ” elucidates Suyi.
