A widespread recall has been issued for approximately 85,984 pounds of sliced prosciutto ham distributed to retail locations in eight states, including Illinois. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall because the product did not undergo proper inspection procedures.
The recalled prosciutto, produced in Germany and sold under the “Stockmeyer” brand, was shipped to California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington stores. The affected products come in 5.29-ounce plastic packages labeled “Stockmeyer Prosciutto Product of Germany” with specific lot codes and “BEST BEFORE” dates ranging from April 28 to October 7, 2024.
The FSIS urges consumers who have purchased this prosciutto to discard it immediately or return it to the point of purchase. This recall was initiated due to concerns about the product’s safety as it did not undergo the necessary inspection to ensure its suitability for consumption. While no adverse reactions have been confirmed yet, consumers are advised to exercise caution.
The specific details regarding the lack of proper inspection remain unclear. However, the FSIS emphasizes the importance of consuming only products that have undergone the designated safety protocols. This recall reminds consumers to be vigilant about checking product labels and adhering to recommended storage and consumption guidelines.
