Italy's performance of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is bouncing up politics in Rome

March 14, 2023: -Italy has a recent face in its national politics compared to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the popular Democrat lawmaker stateside.

Elly Schlein was elected as the centre-left party Partito Democratico (PD) leader, the initial female to get the job. She is from Switzerland and was born to an Italian woman and an American man; she was also a lawmaker in the European Parliament for PD in 2014.

Earlier in their political career, she volunteered in the 2008 Obama campaign when Barack Obama was witnessing off against John McCain. She came back to the Obama campaign four years later to train new volunteers.

Like in many other nations, Italian politics is often associated with older men. But the picture might change, with Rome electing the female prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, for the first time in October.

“I remember thinking at the time whether I wanted my daughter to increase in that env,” Erik Jones, professor at the European University firm in Florence, told about when Silvio Berlusconi served as Italy’s prime minister.

“We are far from that sort of objectification of women today. We should all celebrate that, even if more must be done. Giorgia Meloni and Elly Schlein are flexible of that change,” he further stated.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development data showed that female political representation accounts for just 33.8% of its member nations. In Italy, the number is lower at 32.3%.

Meloni and Schlein hold the top jobs in Italian politics but have different political views.

“I’m Giorgia; I’m a woman, a mother, a Christian!” This was one of Meloni’s main lines in the 2022 campaign.

Schlein stated to the New York Times that she didn’t understand the way of w being a woman, a mother, and a Christian who supports Italians.

“I am a woman. I love a woman. I am not even a mother, but I am not any less of a woman for this,” Schlein stated in the same interview.

In previous remarks, Schlein stated that she wants to tax the wealthy, work closely with trade unions, drive for environmental and feminist ideas, and support gay and immigrant rights.

Conservative media in Italy dub her “CommunistElly” and criticises her “rich” upbringing in Switzerland.

“Meloni has frequently shown off about her being the first female Prime Minister as they left has been unable to produce the same result in a decade-long control of the parliament. Now, things may transform with Elly Schlein,” Matteo Winkler, the professor of law at H.E.C. Paris, said through email.
